First-year students

Welcome to the RAMily! A first-year student is any student attending college for the first time (not including dual-enrollment taken in high school). Orientation offers an immersive experience for students to learn about life at VCU, understand academic requirements, campus resources and to connect with VCU students, faculty and staff.

If you haven’t already, check out the First-Year Student Checklist for more details on the need-to-know information you need to prepare for Orientation and your first semester at VCU!

Summer Orientation will take place virtually to ensure the health and well-being of you and the VCU community. VCU requires all new, incoming students to complete Orientation. New Student and Family Programs at VCU is committed to helping you get RAM READY by sharing campus resources to help you succeed, answering your questions about becoming a new Ram, and connecting you with fellow current and incoming VCU students!

Virtual Orientation has two components:

1) *Ram Ready Online*: Modules will be released throughout the summer for you to complete at your own pace. The first set of modules will be released on *June 15, 2020*. At this time, you will be able to log in to Ram Ready with your VCU eID and password and select the appropriate track based on your student status (e.g. First-Year, Transfer, International or Veteran).

2) *Virtual Orientation Meetings and Events*: Throughout the summer, you will have three required virtual meetings, one with your advisor and two with your Orientation Leader (OL). You will also have the opportunity to participate in other virtual events to connect you with other students and learn more about campus resources. These events will be hosted primarily through RamsConnect and will launch the week of June 15, 2020.

A nonrefundable program fee of $100 is required for all students and is charged during online registration. This fee has been reduced to reflect the cost of a virtual program and covers all orientation staff support, maintenance of the online registration system and Ram Ready online modules, student materials and shipping fees for items to be sent home, in addition to programs and services designed to support new students in their first year (including Weeks of Welcome and other transition events).

For Summer 2020, there is no fee for family members to participate in Orientation but they must be registered in order to gain access to Orientation materials. To register a family member or guest, make sure you add them to your orientation registration.

Ram Ready Online Modules

Online orientation modules will be hosted on Ram Ready Online. Students will complete nine modules throughout the summer, which will be released in three stages. The first set of modules will be released the week of June 15, 2020. For more details on the modules, topics covered and release dates, please see the Orientation Dates & Schedules page

Virtual Orientation & Advising Meetings

You will have three required meetings throughout the summer. Initial Orientation meetings will begin taking place the week of June 15, 2020, and will be with your Orientation Leader (OL) and a small group of fellow students. You will choose this meeting date and time when you register for orientation. Your second meeting will be with your academic advising small group. You will meet virtually with an academic advisor and a small group of students with similar majors. Academic meetings will begin in July after completion of the Academic Success module (Module 4). Your final meeting with your OL and orientation group will take place in late-July or August. Your OL will reach out to schedule this final meeting.

Your OL will hold weekly virtual meet-ups on the same day and time as your initial meeting through the end of July. These meetups provide an opportunity for you to ask questions and connect you with campus resources and catch up with your orientation peer group.

Virtual Events

Throughout the summer your Orientation Leader will be hosting several virtual events with your orientation team to help you connect with other new students. The Orientation staff will also host several informational sessions including q&a’s and/or podcasts with campus departments to ensure you get all of your questions answered before classes begin. Most events will be hosted for students in RamsConnect, VCU’s virtual student organization platform. A schedule of events and more details will be available soon!
