First-year students

First-year students must attend Orientation on a date reserved for their school or college. A first-year student is any student attending college for the first time and transfer students with less than 30 credits (not including dual-enrollment taken in high school).

Summer Orientation is a two-day program for first-year students enrolling in classes for the fall semester. Dates for these programs will be announced in spring 2020 but they typically run from mid-June through the end of July. Sessions are offered on weekdays (M-F) only.

Winter Orientation is a one-day program for first-year students enrolling in classes for the spring semester. Winter Orientation for first-year students is typically held in January before the start of Spring classes. Exact program dates are typically announced in late fall.

A nonrefundable program fee is required for all students and  and charged during online registration. Fees are subject to change and fee waivers are not available.

  • Summer orientation, first-year students: $200/student and $50/guest. 
  • Winter orientation: $100 students*/$25 per guest* (*Fees reflected are valid for 2019-2020 academic year only and are subject to change.)

The student fee covers lunch and dinner on day one, breakfast on day two, parking, facility fees, orientation staffing, program materials and overnight accommodations (only during June/July orientations) in addition to programs and services designed to support new students during their first year. 

The guest fee covers refreshments and lunch on day one and a breakfast reception on day two, facility fees, orientation staffing, program materials, and programs and services designed to support new families.

Fees cover a meal, parking, facility fees, orientation staffing and orientation materials. Overnight accommodations are not included. For options, check with .

During Orientation, most meals are provided at Market810 located in the Shafer Court Dining Center. There, you’ll find plenty of options that are sure to meet your dietary needs. You can also purchase snacks at vendors throughout campus.

Orientation attendees should download the VCU Mobile app from the App Store or Google Play. More details for orientation, including schedules, parking and arrival information are posted in the Orientation Guide 1-2 weeks prior to your registered orientation date.
